Peking Duck

For the last few months, six of us have been trying to locate the best version of Peking Duck in Northern Virginia. Thus far, Mark’s Duck House (Arlington Blvd.) and Duck Chang’s (John Marr Drive) have failed to impress. Neither restaurant carves the duck in front of diners and at Duck House, the server even prepared the pancakes for us. Most of the Peking Duck fun, to our minds, is watching it being carved and then creating the perfect package of duck, duck skin, scallions and hoisin sauce. We do have memories of all that theater at Peking Gourmet (Route 7), but had grown tired of that dated crowded
dining room. Perhaps it’s time for a another try. Any suggestions out there?

Washington Hot Spots

We've heard most of the celebs in town for the Inauguration dined at one of two restaurants: Cafe Milano in Georgetown and the Blue Duck Tavern a bit further downtown.

Some other celebrities, including a new addition to the celebrity ranks, the pilot who succesfully maneuvered the emergency landing into the Hudson River last week, dined at none other than the Hudson Restaurant and Lounge near Dupont Circle.

Check out these restaurants to bask in the glow of our new status as a celebrity town! Be sure to let us know what you think...

Enjoy!

"West Side Story"

“West Side Story” at the National Theatre through Saturday is a terrific musical with lots of excellent songs and voices, energetic and gorgeous choreography (especially the faux fight scenes), innovative scenery and very attractive leads. We enjoyed it despite the weak plot. It runs almost three hours and probably could benefit from a little judicious cutting before it heads to Broadway, its next venue.

Washington is a theater town!

Please enjoy this excerpt taken from our January 2008 E-Newsletter:

More than 100 theaters mount performances in the metro area. You don't need to go to New York to see musicals such as "West Side Story", "A Chorus Line" and "Chicago" (National Theater) or "Les Miserables" (Signature Theatre), Legally Blonde and Ragtime (Kennedy Center). "Avenue Q" and "Jesus Christ Superstar" are coming up at the Warner. And "Twelfth Night" is at the Shakespeare Theatre. Ranging from small volunteer companies to the professional pre- and post-Broadway productions, there's something for all - from age 3 to 93! Most theaters have websites and run ads in "City Paper" and the "Post". Make this the year that you visit at least one of our local theaters.

2008 Northern Virginia Real Estate Summary

Taking a quick look at the overall market in Northern Virginia, including Prince William and Loudoun, 2008 was a better year in terms of the number of transactions--but we're still way off from the peak of the market in 2004. In fact, we're not even back to the level of homes sales in 1999. The significant drop in sales has put downward pressure on pricing.

It is safe to say that if one measures a market recovery as one with both an increase in the number of transactions and an increase in prices, we're not there yet, and probably won't be until the third quarter of this year--at the earliest. And since the increases in contract activity that we are seeing are concentrated in the lower price ranges-- you can also expect that it will take even longer for any significant recovery in more expensive homes.

But don't fret! This means it is an excellent time to buy a home, especially for first time buyers, and 2009 is already showing a pick-up in activity! Please don't hesitate to call or e-mail us for any of your real estate needs!

Mediterranean Bakery in Alexandria

Just off Duke Street, in the Home Depot shopping center, is a wonderful place to shop. The Mediterranean Bakery has the best hummus in town – nice, lemony and garlicky, but not too garlicky. Baba ghanough, dolma (stuffed grape leaves with either meat or rice filling), yogurt sauces and taramosolata plus a showcase of delectable candies and baked goods including luscious baklava! You can order sandwiches and soup to eat in a small seating area just as you enter. The aisles are filled with gourmet groceries from around the world and the pita is fresh and delicious. Perfect for assembling a quick and easy dinner or a picnic.

Liberty Tavern in Arlington

If you’re 30 or under, here’s the place to hang out on a Saturday night at the three deep packed bar and lounge. Older than that, join the folks (and some children) upstairs to peruse a short and very sophisticated menu of appetizers, small plates and entrees. You’ll find some unfamiliar names (fritto misto, branzino, bollito misto and cotechino) and some tried and true pizzas. Our group opted to try the skate (a fish) entrée stuffed with white cornmeal johnnycakes, the skirt steak with sunchokes and the bollito misto (veal cheeks among the many ingredients) plus some of the more unusual pizzas (cheese and apple). Superb server and a nice wines- by –the- glass list, but the food left us all slightly mystified. Try the bar food menu with its innovative sandwiches and pizzas instead.

What to do when your appliances need repair

Go to NAHB.org to find out the life expectancy of your appliance. Then go to RepairClinic.com to see if this is a do it yourself project. Then post your dilemma at appliancguru.com, an appliance repair forum. Finally, consider replacement if the item is beyond three-fourths life expectancy and repairs would cost more than one third of the replacement value.
